Rare coat rack designed by Coen de Vries, manufactured by Devo in the Netherlands, circa 1950.
This “tone ladder” coat rack resembles a musical tone ladder, with the colourful hooks being the notes. It has a black lacquered steel frame and the hooks are made of coloured bent metal. This is an especially rare edition with a hat shelf on top.
In good original condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a nice patina.
Coen de Vries (1918) was born in The Hague. He studied furniture design and interior art at the Royal Academy in The Hague. As part of an exchange program, he studied at the Institute of Applied Art in Amsterdam, where he took lessons from Mart Stam and Johan Niegeman who were trained at the Bauhaus in Dessau.
