An eye-catching ceramics daybed, designed by Jan Snoeck from the the MS Volendam (HAL) in The Hague, The Netherlands in 1994.

This is one of the ceramic beds that decorated the swimming deck of the MS Volendam (we have photos available), a cruise ship that’s part of to Holland-America line. The beautiful design is very colorful and smoothly shaped like a bed with human shapes in beautiful ceramic tiles. Different colored tiles are used: white, yellow, black, light blue, dark blue and red tiles contrast very nicely to each other and allow a playful, bright and colorful style to be created, iconic for Snoeck’s work. Any outdoor decor will be greatly uplifted with this beautiful piece of Dutch art / sculpting history!

This bed is part of a set, we have the other pieces available as well! Please have a look at our stock or request for latest stock info. We have more Snoeck pieces available, please request for more info.

The bed remains in good, vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina.

About the artist:
Jan Cornelis Snoeck (5 March 1927 – 31 March 2018) was a Dutch sculptor and ceramist, famous for his colourful ceramics sculptures and other work. Snoeck studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague where he graduated in 1949. In 1953 he worked for a year in the workshop of famous artist Ossip Zadkine in Paris. Initially Jan Snoeck worked with the materials stone, wood and bronze. Later he mainly worked in ceramics. He used cheerful, primary colors and usually people as the subject. Among other things, he made a sculpture “The beds” for Westeinde Hospital in The Hague (see image). Snoeck work is in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Princessehof Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden.
On June 2, 2007 Snoeck was awarded the Aart van den IJssel prize by the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg. This prize is awarded every three years to a professional artist as a token of appreciation for his or her total oeuvre.
The museum Beelden aan Zee at Scheveningen in 2007 held a retrospective of the work of Jan Snoeck on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. He was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion. The decorations was pinned on him during the opening of that exhibition, entitled “De goddelijke aardwormen van Jan Snoeck” (The Divine earthworms Jan Snoeck).
